samenvatting: This report focuses primarily on events that activists identified as "Pride," but also includes other events aimed at advancing public visibility of LGBTIQ people, queer cultures, and human rights issues affecting LGBTIQ communities. It centers around seven country case studies - the Bahamas, Georgia, Hungary, Lithuania, Ghana, Malawi, and Rwanda - where Pride events were new or notable in 2021, or, in the case of Ghana, where heightened repression made Pride impossible to celebrate. The case studies use Pride as a steppingstone to examine broader legal, political, and social dynamics in the seven countries. In this report, OutRight also tracks the proliferation of visibility events around the world, providing data on countries in which Pride events were held in 2021 - at least 107 countries, a notable increase over previously tracked data, despite obstacles posed by COVID-19. The report also provides data on countries in which Pride is celebrated outside capital cities, an important step for many movements. A multiplicity of Pride locations reinforces that LGBTIQ people are everywhere, and dispels the myth that queerness is restricted to cosmopolitan, urban elites.

Between certain death and a possible future : queer writing on growing up with the AIDS crisis  /

samenvatting: Every queer person lives with the trauma of AIDS, and this plays out intergenerationally. Usually we hear about two generations--the first, coming of age in the era of gay liberation, and then watching entire circles of friends die of a mysterious illness as the government did nothing to intervene. And now we hear about younger people growing up with effective treatment and prevention available, unable to comprehend the magnitude of the loss. But there is another generation between these two, one that came of age in the midst of the epidemic with the belief that desire intrinsically led to death, and internalized this trauma as part of becoming queer. Between Certain Death and a Possible Future: Queer Writing on Growing up with the AIDS Crisis offers crucial stories from this missing generation in AIDS literature and cultural politics. This wide-ranging collection includes 36 personal essays on the ongoing and persistent impact of the HIV/AIDS crisis in queer lives. Here you will find an expansive range of perspectives on a specific generational story--essays that explore and explode conventional wisdom, while also providing a necessary bridge between experiences. These essays respond, with eloquence and incisiveness, to the question: How do we reckon with the trauma that continues to this day, and imagine a way out?

"Queer as hell media" : Affirming LGBTQ+ youth identity and building community in Metro Atlanta, Georgia  / Cameron Greensmith & Bo King.

Journal of LGBT Youth, 19 (2022) 2 (apr-jun), p. 180-197
bron: Journal of LGBT Youth jaargang: 19 (2022) 2 (apr-jun), p. 180-197
samenvatting: Within the United States, the American South holds the largest number of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBTQ+) people, which totals to 3.8 million (LGBTQ in 2016). Metro Atlanta is uniquely situated within the South's geography; the City of Atlanta is hailed as a queer mecca while the suburbs and surrounding rural areas are assumed to reproduce and reinforce racist, conservative, and religious ideologies. A total of 12 qualitative interviews with LGBTQ+ youth (ages 18-26) at Kennesaw State University offer a more nuanced understanding of being LGBTQ+ in the South by shedding light on the ways they thrive, form relationships, and seek out knowledge regarding LGBTQ+ identity and experience. Findings highlight that LGBTQ+ youth utilize all forms of media to affirm their identities, create like-minded communities, and take up space as a "fuck you" to the imagined cisheteronormativity in Georgia. The article centers the voices and critiques of LGBTQ+ young people as they negotiate competing discourses of queer acceptability and inclusivity, turning to new media platforms as spaces where they can find safety, as well as curate themselves and their experiences.

Pink Networks : An exploratory study of queer older adults' use of queer joy, practical kinship, and care relationships to do relatedness in the Dutch context  / Lara Fizaine.

samenvatting: In this thesis, I argue that queer older adults in the Dutch context do relatedness through queer joy, practical kinship, and care relationships, in which: a) Relatedness is meant to include "literally any kind of relation between persons" (Stafford, 2000, p. 37) and is based on metaphorical con-substantiality, or the idea that flows between people of things that are not actual substances but possess animating properties and are linked to strong emotions, that has the power to build a connection between people (Carsten, 2011). b) Queer joy is the kind of bittersweet joy that one, as a queer person, might feel when they realize that although they are not living in their ideal reality, they have the power to imagine, play with and occasionally get a taste of this ideal reality (Muñoz, 2019; Royster, 2021); but also a doing - the act of creating a temporary, utopian space together - with the power of creating fluid and mutable networks of relatedness. c) Practical kinship is kinship seldom based on norms, hinging instead on the choice to maintain it through kin work (Yan, 2020), which I argue is what enables my participants to not be alone even when they have little in ways of normative kinship. d) Care relationships are what allow queer older adults to confirm, undo, create, and strengthen ties with kin of all kinds, and are mostly focused on experiencing the need for care in groups, leading to the formation of care networks akin to therapy networks (Krause, 2008).

"We Deserve Protection" : Anti-LGBTIQ Legislation and Violence in Ghana  / Ohotuowo Ogbech.

samenvatting: Violence against gender and sexual minorities has surged recently in Ghana, largely stimulated by an expansive anti-LGBTIQ bill now under consideration in Parliament. Though the legislation was introduced in June 2021 and has not yet been adopted, its backers have succeeded in creating an anti-LGBTIQ climate well before they proposed specific legislation. Hostility toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) people has only intensified since. The new proposed legislation, titled the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021 (the Bill), targets all gender and sexual minorities by prescribing strict punishments for simply existing, including fines, imprisonment, and conversion practices. The Bill empowers persons and institutions to report, arrest, detain, and prosecute LGBTIQ persons. They are also empowered to discriminate against gender and sexual minorities at work, home, and in health care and other public goods and services. The Bill indirectly sanctions hatred and violence against LGBTIQ persons by its mere introduction in Parliament. To document the impacts of the Bill on sexual and gender minority persons in Ghana, OutRight Action International (OutRight) interviewed 44 Ghanaians of various minority gender identities, sexual orientations, and sex characteristics. This research finds that the Bill has created a hostile and dangerous situation for sexual and gender minorities in Ghana, leading to multiple forms of human rights violations without redress. These include mob attacks, physical violence, arbitrary arrests, blackmail and onlineharassment, verbal harassment, gang rape and other acts of sexual violence, conversion practices, forced evictions and homelessness, employmentdiscrimination, and robbery. In addition, the police violate persons' rights based on perceived or actual sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, and sex characteristics, including arbitrary arrests, detentions and courtcases, forced searches, verbal and physical harassment, extortion and intimidation, among others.

A Quiet Foghorn : more notes from a deaf gay life  /

Raymond Luczak.Washington, DC: Gallaudet University Press, 2022 - 176 p.
uitgave: Washington, DC: Gallaudet University Press, 2022 - 176 p.

samenvatting: In this collection of essays, Raymond Luczak once again offers readers powerful and deeply personal reflections on his experiences as a Deaf gay man. He begins his journey with the printed word where lipreading is not required, and discovers a family of sorts through the writings of Walt Whitman and others; he ventures deeper into the queer community with thoughts on ageism, disability, and radical faeries. Luczak explores the many nuances within the Deaf community and the audist attitudes of hearing people, particularly in the media, and takes a detour into ASL gloss poetry. He speculates on what the Deaf community will look like a century from now and ends with a long bike ride that celebrates the ongoing questions of being a Deaf gay man.

"Examined Masculinity": Bi + Men's Experiences of Sexuality and Gender across Heteronormative & Queer Spaces  / Christopher Anders ...[et al.].

Journal of Bisexuality, 23 (2023) 1 (jan-mar), p. 80-110
bron: Journal of Bisexuality jaargang: 23 (2023) 1 (jan-mar), p. 80-110
samenvatting: Bi + individuals make up the largest proportion of the LGBTQ + community (Gates, 2011), but are often underrepresented in the literature (Galupo at al., 2017). Most research on bi + experiences focuses on discrimination (Roberts et al., 2015; Sarno et al., 2020; Weiss, 2003), whereas less research has examined the ways in which bi + men develop their own self-concepts of gender and sexuality while facing negative stigmatization and erasure from both heterosexual and queer communities. This study implements Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR; Hill et al., 1997; Hill et al., 2005) to examine the question: how do bi + men develop and express their masculinity and sexuality while moving between and within heteronormative and queer sociocultural spaces? Findings consist of six domains including: (1) Beyond labels; (2) Fighting for authenticity; (3) Policing identity; (4) Importance of social support; (5) Intersecting identities; and (6) Family influence. Ultimately, bi + men described flexibility in their gender and sexual identities, a resilient pursuit of authenticity amidst negative experiences and ostracization from possible spaces in which to explore identity, the influence of racial, religious and cultural values on their identity development, and the invaluable nature of an affirming, accepting and encouraging environment.

Drastic Dykes and Accidental Activists : Queer Women in the Urban South  /

samenvatting: After World War II, Atlanta and Charlotte emerged as leading urban centers in the South, redefining the region through their competing metropolitan identities. Both cities also served as home to queer communities who defined themselves in accordance with their urban surroundings and profited to varying degrees from the emphasis on economic growth. Uniting southern women's history with urban history, La Shonda Mims considers an imaginatively constructed archive including feminist newsletters and queer bar guides alongside sources revealing corporate boosterism and political rhetoric to explore the complex nature of lesbian life in the South. Mims's work reveals significant differences between gay men's and lesbian women's lived experiences, with lesbians often missing out on the promises of prosperity that benefitted some members of gay communities. Money, class, and race were significant variables in shaping the divergent life experiences for the lesbian communities of Atlanta and Charlotte; whiteness especially bestowed certain privileges. In Atlanta, an inclusive corporate culture bolstered the city's queer community. In Charlotte, tenacious lesbian collectives persevered, as many queer Charlotteans leaned on Atlanta's enormous Pride celebrations for sanctuary when similar institutional community supports were lacking at home.
